Guinness World Record attempt in North Bay, Ontario

SNOWARAMA 2000 ~ Millennium Charity Challenge

for Easter Seal Children

A message from John Seguin

UPDATE

Thank you for all your help in maintaining our web-site during Snowarama 2000.

As to the event on Sunday, February 13, it was awesome and very emotional to all participants. Even though we did not get the turnout that we would have liked in numbers of snowmobiles, the event was a great success with lots of media coverage. We did set a Guinness World Record with 296 snowmobiles in a continuous moving line. It took 25 minutes to get them all through the start line and the run itself lasted 65 minutes with a line stetching some 10 km along the course. A total of approx. $70,000 was raised for Easter Seal Society during the various Snowarama on the weekend which includes the radar runs, silent auction, women on snow and the Guinness run on Sunday.

The winner of the early bird draw was # 8, Cathy Chivers and the winner of

the Artic Cat 580 ZL was # 134, David Baker.

Again Ralph, many thanks for all your help.

Snowarama 2000 event coordinator

Why as a snowmobiler would I want to participate in Snowarama 2000 ?

Four good reasons come to my mind:

* For the Easter Seal kids!

* To set a new Guinness World Record

* For a chance to win a $10,000 snowmobile

* For recognition - your name in the newspaper as a participant

Snowarama 2000 originated as an idea some eighteen months ago during a brain storming session to get more snowmobilers participating in this great cause.

Since its inception, Snowarama has raised more than 14 million dollars in support of the Easter Seal Society, Ontario by snowmobilers like yourself and has been an annual event in the North Bay area since 1975.

Snowarama 2000, scheduled for February 13th, 2000 will be different from previous years as it will attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the "Most Number of Snowmobiles in a Continuous Moving Line". All proceeds from registrations and pledges will go to Easter Seal Society, Ontario.

Apart from raising money and awareness for Easter Seals Society, one of our goals was to ensure that we also covered all expenses for this event ...and I am happy to say that this has been accomplished through the generosity of our many sponsors. Our major sponsors, True North Chev Olds Cadillac donated a substantial amount of cash towards expenses, Crain- Drummond printed the bar-coded souvenir decals that will be affixed to each sled, Intermec Technologies Canada Ltd are providing people and high tech bar-code readers to confirm the starting and finishing number of participants and www.abcinfonet.com is providing and maintaining our web-site. To our many other sponsors, we thank you for your support.

Fellow snowmobilers, this may be the event of a lifetime so I ask you to SIGN UP, SUIT UP and BE PART OF HISTORY IN THE MAKING! There is no other such event in the world! So in keeping with the reasons I mentioned above, I know that many of you who enjoy the pleasures of snowmobiling will be willing to donate one day to participate in this great cause for the Easter Seal kids... and help us set a Guinness World Record that may never be challenged or broken.

Don't forget that during Snowarama 2000, on February 13th, some lucky sledder will win a 2000 Arctic Cat 580 SL snowmobile generously donated by Arctic Cat, Carlson Sports and RV, Molson and Average Joe's Restaurant. Lastly, your name and city will be published in the local newspaper as proof that you were a participant in setting a Guinness World Record.

Snowarama 2000 will start on Trout Lake with registration at the Canoe Club building at 8am. If you have pre-registered and have your decal on your sled, then you just go directly to the scanning area where your bar-code will be scanned. You will then be directed to a staging area while awaiting the start of the event. The order in which you are scanned will be approximately the order of departure. The event will get under way at 11am.

To ensure that we set a Guinness World Record two simple rules must be followed:

1) Once the Start line is crossed the line of snowmobiles cannot stop, and

2) No two snowmobiles can be more than 50 metres apart.

These criteria must be maintained for the full 25km until the snowmobiles cross the Finish line. An event of this magnitude can only be successful through the help of the many volunteers that have donated many hours on committees during the last 10 months. To them I would like to say THANK YOU.

So fellow snowmobilers, we the committees have done our part, it's up to you the snowmobile rider to make it happen. We need riders so please sign up, suit up and come and have fun.

MEDIA RELEASE
North Bay "World Record Challenge" in Jeopardy

Organizers of Snowarama 2000 Charity Challenge are concerned that with only a few weeks to go until their Guinness Challenge, set for Sunday February 13th, participant registrations to date fall well below expectations. While Snowarama is an annual fundraiser for Easter Seals children, hosted by the North Bay Snowmobile Club, this year's event seeks to not only raise funds but also set a new world record for the "most number of snowmobiles in a continuous line".
"The goal is 2000 snowmobiles for the year 2000." says John Seguin, one of the project coordinators, "There are about 7000 sledders in the Near North district who are within easy travelling distance to participate in this most worthwhile event... and if even a third of them participate then we have set a new world record right here in North Bay!"
Information and registration forms have been circulating throughout Northern Ontario via news media, newsletters, snowmobile clubs and trade magazines since November and initial response to the event has been excellent! At this point in time, however, registrations confirming participation have been slow to trickle in. Sledders are encouraged to register before February 7th in order to qualify for the Early Bird Draw. Registration forms are available online at www.snowarama2000. on.ca , at snowmobile dealers in the area, at the Portage Hotel or at Average Joe's on Trout Lake Road. "Logistically, our course is ready, staging, scanning and registration have all been approved and a test run to prove the concept will be held on site Sunday February 6th at 11am." Says Peter Schoen, one of the project coordinators.
Since its inception, Snowarama has raised more than 14 million dollars in support of Easter Seal Society, Ontario, and their work on behalf of children with physical disabilities and their families. The Easter Seal Society, Ontario, makes a difference in the lives of children and their families by providing services, equipment, programs, research, advocacy and public education and helps children with physical disabilities achieve their full individual potential and future independence.
